Escalating Iran-US Tensions Propel Oil Prices Upward by 7%

-

Global oil prices have experienced a significant surge, climbing over 7%, amid escalating military tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. This development has sparked concerns over possible disruptions to the global energy supply. Brent crude prices saw an increase of nearly 8%, reaching approximately $90.75 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose almost 7%, hitting around $84.76 per barrel. These sharp increases come in the wake of new military exchanges that have amplified fears of an extended conflict in the region.

The tensions have been exacerbated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which announced it launched ballistic missiles aimed at U.S. military facilities in Jordan. This action was described as a response to recent American military operations. In turn, U.S. and Saudi forces conducted coordinated strikes on Iran-backed militant sites in Iraq, targeting logistics and weapons facilities they allege are linked to ongoing drone attacks on military and energy infrastructure. These developments have raised alarms about the potential for escalating conflict and its impact on oil markets.

Adding to the instability, the IRGC reported that its naval forces intercepted and attacked three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz after they allegedly disregarded navigation warnings. In a separate incident, Houthi rebels from Yemen claimed responsibility for attacking a Saudi-linked oil tanker in the Red Sea, further heightening the risks associated with commercial shipping in these critical waterways.

These renewed hostilities are causing increased anxiety over the security of maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, both of which are vital corridors for global energy transit. Market analysts have cautioned that if attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure persist, it could sustain high oil prices and lead to greater volatility in global markets.
