Tensions have flared between Hungary’s ruling FIDESZ party and Finance Minister András Kármán over conflicting views on the country’s economic trajectory. FIDESZ has voiced concerns that the Hungarian economy is on the brink of stagnation, attributing the potential downturn to the government’s economic strategies.
Bertalan Havasi, the communications director for FIDESZ, highlighted the risk of deteriorating macroeconomic indicators. He criticized Kármán for his handling of comments made by FIDESZ Chairman Viktor Orbán, urging the finance minister to prioritize transparency and provide the public with accurate economic data.
In contrast, Finance Minister Kármán defended the government’s record, asserting that the economy remains stable and is expected to achieve nearly 2% growth this year. He emphasized ongoing efforts to bolster public finances and countered the notion of impending economic difficulties.
The dispute follows a recent speech by Viktor Orbán in Kötcse, where he addressed potential economic challenges and their possible impact on government policies. This backdrop has intensified the public discourse between the ruling party and the finance ministry, reflecting differing perspectives on Hungary’s economic health.
