Greece has significantly stepped up its diplomatic efforts at the United Nations General Assembly, with Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis taking the lead in high-level discussions on key issues such as regional security, maritime safety, and international cooperation. This intensified engagement comes amid ongoing conflicts and instability in the Middle East and reflects Greece’s commitment to bolstering its regional partnerships, particularly with Cyprus.
Gerapetritis underscored the importance of trilateral talks involving Greece, Cyprus, Jordan, and Egypt. Additionally, he held bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from India, Brazil, and Eritrea, highlighting the strategic importance of these discussions in the current geopolitical climate.
A notable development was the co-hosting of a high-level event by Greece and India, focusing on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. The event explored these technologies’ applications in shipping, maritime security, and ensuring freedom of navigation. Given Greece’s status as a major global shipping nation, Gerapetritis also participated in the inaugural meeting of the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers, emphasizing the need for robust protection of maritime routes.
In October, Greece is set to assume the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council, marking the second time it holds this position during its current two-year term. Gerapetritis noted the significance of this presidency, as it coincides with ongoing international crises and the process of selecting the next UN Secretary-General. The presidency is expected to focus on pressing issues such as armed conflicts and global security challenges.
Beyond these engagements, Greece’s broader agenda at the General Assembly includes discussions on the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, developments in Sub-Saharan Africa, and efforts towards UN reform and strengthening multilateral cooperation. These initiatives underscore Greece’s proactive role in addressing global issues through diplomatic channels.
