Péter Szijjártó Leaves Hungarian Parliament to Join BYD as Executive

-

Péter Szijjártó, the former Foreign Minister of Hungary, has stepped down from his role in parliament to join the Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD in a senior capacity. Announcing the move via social media, Szijjártó revealed that he accepted a “highly prestigious offer” to lead BYD’s efforts in external relations and the expansion of new business opportunities, marking his exit from politics.

BYD, recognized as the world’s largest manufacturer of new-energy vehicles, is expanding its reach in Hungary with a significant manufacturing facility in Szeged. This project, one of Hungary’s most notable economic undertakings, was supported by Szijjártó during his tenure in government. The company has solidified its position as a global frontrunner in the electric vehicle market, having sold over 4.5 million vehicles and surpassing several major rivals in recent years.

The departure of Szijjártó underscores the strengthening economic connections between Hungary and China, especially in the automotive and electric vehicle sectors. The move also reflects China’s growing influence in the Hungarian economy as BYD continues to expand its European footprint.

Officials from Fidesz, Hungary’s ruling party, including Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, have been discussing Szijjártó’s resignation in recent weeks. The party’s executive committee is expected to deliberate further on adjustments within its parliamentary group in the coming days.

Szijjártó’s transition from politics to a corporate role at BYD highlights a significant career shift, while also emphasizing the strategic collaboration between Hungary and China in advancing electric vehicle technology and manufacturing.
