Google Hit with €890 Million Fine by EU for Competition Breach

-

The European Union has imposed a hefty €890 million fine on Google for violating the bloc’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). This penalty stems from Google’s practices with its search engine and app store, which allegedly give undue advantage to the tech giant’s own services and restrict competition from other platforms.

Specifically, the European Commission has levied a €460 million fine against Google for prioritizing its own services, such as shopping and hotel listings, in search results over those of rival platforms. Another €430 million fine was issued due to Google’s restrictions on app developers, which prevented them from directing users to more affordable options available on their websites or through alternative app stores.

In response to these findings, Google has been mandated to offer equal treatment to third-party services in its search results, ensuring fair competition without discrimination. Additionally, the company is required to permit app developers to highlight offers outside of the Google Play Store, potentially opening up new avenues for competition.

EU officials have acknowledged that Google has already initiated testing changes to its search algorithms, which they view as a significant step towards aligning with the Digital Markets Act. This ruling aims to foster greater competition in the digital marketplace, ultimately benefiting consumers by increasing their choices and forcing Google to modify its business practices throughout the European Union.
