Russia Accused by Germany of Drone Strike on Leipzig Airport

-

Germany has leveled accusations against Russia, claiming it orchestrated a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport as part of a broader strategy of hybrid warfare aimed at destabilizing the nation. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul revealed that investigators have found evidence suggesting Russian state involvement in providing the necessary equipment and expertise for the foiled attack, with lower-level operatives allegedly recruited to execute the plan.

On August 4, authorities discovered a drone carrying explosives inside the airport’s security perimeter, near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane used to deliver weapons to Ukraine. Although the explosive device did not detonate, German officials warned of the potential for significant destruction. Further investigations uncovered traces of the military explosive hexogen and another drone near the site, initially suggesting a second drone’s involvement, though this theory has since faced scrutiny.

In response, Germany announced a series of countermeasures against Russia, including increased sanctions, stricter entry controls for Russian nationals, and new restrictions targeting individuals linked to Russian activities. Measures are also being planned against Russia’s “shadow fleet,” which facilitates the transport of Russian oil and other goods. Additionally, Berlin is backing a new EU sanctions package against more Russian-linked entities.

Foreign Minister Wadephul clarified that Germany is not at war with Russia, but the country has increasingly become a target of hybrid warfare tactics, such as sabotage, disinformation, threats, and destabilization. Germany’s NATO and European partners have expressed solidarity, emphasizing the need for a united reaction to the perceived growing hybrid threat from Russia. European leaders stressed that such attacks must not go unanswered.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied the allegations and criticized the proposed sanctions, arguing they are detrimental to Germany’s interests. The German government has briefed NATO and European allies on the findings and their intended response. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte acknowledged that Germany had provided evidence implicating Moscow, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen assured continued support for Germany. This incident marks a further decline in German-Russian relations, already strained by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Officials across Europe are examining potential links between this and other suspected Russian-related activities, including sabotage and drone incidents.
