German Leader Merz Warns Against Sending Children to the US

-

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has voiced concerns about the current social climate in the United States, advising against his children studying or working there. Speaking at a conference for young Catholics in Würzburg, Merz, who is often regarded as a supporter of strong transatlantic relations, expressed his discontent with the rapidly changing environment in what he once saw as a land of opportunity. “I am a great admirer of America. At the moment my admiration is not growing,” he stated, highlighting the challenges even well-educated individuals face in securing employment in the U.S.

Merz’s comments have sparked a strong reaction from allies of former U.S. President Donald Trump, with whom Merz is already at odds over the Iran conflict. Richard Grenell, a former U.S. ambassador to Germany under Trump, criticized Merz on social media, calling him the “European President of the TDS Society,” referencing so-called Trump derangement syndrome. Grenell accused Merz of lacking a strategic approach and being influenced by German media, contrasting his current stance with a previously more conciliatory tone during a White House meeting with Trump.

Merz’s remarks also drew criticism from German far-right leader Alice Weidel, whose Alternative für Deutschland party shares some support with Trump’s Maga movement. Weidel questioned Merz’s warning about the U.S. political climate while accusing him of leading Germany towards economic and social decline. She argued that his comments were not in the best interests of Germany.

The backdrop to these tensions includes disputes over trade and military aid for Ukraine, which have strained relations between the U.S. and its European allies and tested the strength of the NATO alliance. Merz is facing challenges at home as he attempts to revitalize Germany’s struggling economy, which has been affected by the U.S.-Israeli military actions in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. In a recent controversy, Merz stated that the U.S. was being “humiliated” by Iran, a remark that angered Trump and led to U.S. retaliatory actions, including a partial troop withdrawal from Germany and increased tariffs on EU car imports.

Despite the backlash, Merz remains committed to maintaining strong transatlantic relations. He noted in a social media post that he had discussed international issues, including Iran and Ukraine, with Trump by phone, emphasizing the partnership between the U.S. and Germany within NATO. As he navigates these diplomatic challenges, Merz continues to urge Germans to remain optimistic about their country’s potential, suggesting that few nations offer as many opportunities as Germany does, particularly for young people.
