Hungary Fails to Obtain Access to Frozen EU Funds, EU Commission Reports

-

The European Commission has dismissed assertions that Hungary has already accessed or been granted billions of euros in European Union funds that were previously frozen. Contrary to these claims, the Commission clarified that Hungary has yet to officially request payments under the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The deadline for Hungary to submit the necessary documentation to access these funds is September 30, 2026.

According to the European Commission, Hungary must first demonstrate that it has implemented the required reforms and investments before any funds can be disbursed. This involves providing detailed documentation, which the Commission will scrutinize to ensure compliance with established reforms and “super milestones.” As of now, Hungary’s submission is pending, and the review process will only begin once the payment request has been submitted.

The Commission has made it clear that no payments have been approved or transferred to Hungary at this stage. It reiterated that all approved payments, contingent upon the successful assessment of Hungary’s compliance, will be processed by December 31, 2026. However, if Hungary’s submission is found lacking or requires adjustments, additional documentation might be needed, potentially causing delays in the release of funds.

This clarification from the European Commission comes in response to claims from the TISZA government, which had suggested that Hungary had effectively secured the frozen EU funding. The Commission’s statement underscores that the funds are still pending and subject to a comprehensive evaluation of Hungary’s adherence to the necessary conditions.
