Venice Commission Consults with Hungarian President on Constitution Conflict

-

In a significant meeting at Sándor Palace, Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok engaged with representatives from the Venice Commission to address constitutional challenges that have emerged following Hungary’s recent elections. The discussions centered around resolving disputes involving the country’s public institutions while adhering to European constitutional standards.

The delegation from the Venice Commission, which serves as the Council of Europe’s advisory body on constitutional law, included prominent figures such as President Marta Cartabia, Director and Secretary Simona Granata-Menghini, and Austrian Commission member Christoph Grabenwarter. Their visit to Budapest marks the beginning of consultations aimed at gathering information to address the constitutional concerns raised by Hungary.

Earlier in May, President Sulyok formally requested assistance from the Venice Commission to provide expert insights into the constitutional issues at hand. This move underscores Hungary’s commitment to ensuring that its constitutional framework aligns with European principles. In response, the Venice Commission agreed to prioritize the examination of these matters urgently, demonstrating their willingness to collaborate in finding solutions.

The Presidential Office has expressed optimism regarding the involvement of the Venice Commission, anticipating that their recommendations will play a crucial role in preserving Hungary’s constitutional order. By seeking external guidance, Hungary aims to navigate its constitutional challenges effectively while upholding its obligations to European standards.

As consultations continue in Budapest, the outcome of these discussions will be closely watched, with the potential to impact Hungary’s governance and its relationship with European institutions. The collaboration between Hungarian authorities and the Venice Commission reflects a shared commitment to resolving constitutional disputes through dialogue and expert advice.
