Greece Pursues Enhanced Labor Ties with Vietnam, ASEAN Countries

-

Greece is prioritizing the strengthening of labor cooperation with Vietnam and other ASEAN nations to tackle workforce shortages and bolster economic growth. This initiative was highlighted by the Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum, Athanasios Plevris, during a meeting held in Athens with representatives from Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Plevris stressed the importance of forming early bilateral labor agreements to safeguard the rights of both workers and employers, which aligns with Greece’s broader efforts to minimize irregular migration.

The discussions come in the wake of the European Union’s new Pact on Migration and Asylum, which has elevated migration management to a critical priority for Greece. Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Thị Thu Hương shared that labor cooperation talks have advanced since previous discussions with the Greek minister. She expressed optimism that a bilateral labor agreement between Vietnam and Greece would soon come to fruition, which she believes would enhance employment opportunities for Vietnamese workers and strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

Plevris responded positively to the ambassador’s comments, expressing his support for the proposal. He has instructed relevant Greek authorities to continue negotiations with Vietnam and other ASEAN countries to expedite the finalization of labor cooperation agreements. These agreements are seen as a crucial step in addressing Greece’s labor shortages while ensuring fair treatment and protection for foreign workers.

As of now, the Ministry of Migration and Asylum in Greece reports that approximately 1,700 Vietnamese workers hold valid residence permits in the country. This existing workforce underscores the potential benefits of a formalized labor agreement, which could open up more structured avenues for employment and contribute to Greece’s economic objectives.
