In a bid to enhance security cooperation, Greek Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis and Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci met in Athens to address cross-border crime. The meeting, which took place at Greece’s Ministry of Citizen Protection, followed the Greece–Türkiye Supreme Cooperation Council meeting in Ankara earlier this year.
The discussions primarily centered on combating organized crime, terrorism, extremism, human trafficking, and drug smuggling. Both ministers emphasized the need to tackle criminal networks that exploit undocumented migrants and engage in money laundering linked to illegal activities.
Chrysochoidis highlighted the importance of improving information sharing and operational coordination between the security agencies of Greece and Türkiye. He also expressed concerns about Turkish nationals allegedly linked to criminal groups operating within Greece.
Ciftci expressed satisfaction with the current level of collaboration and supported the expansion of joint efforts, particularly in strengthening security measures and disrupting criminal networks involved in human trafficking.
This meeting underscores ongoing efforts by Greece and Türkiye to address shared security challenges despite persistent bilateral differences. The commitment to enhance cooperation reflects a mutual understanding of the necessity to address security threats that transcend national borders.
