Erdoğan, Merz Deliberate on NATO, Ukraine Conflict, and Strengthening Bilateral Relations

In a phone call on Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz engaged in discussions centered on strengthening bilateral relations, NATO cooperation, and addressing global security challenges. The conversation highlighted Türkiye’s aim to bolster ties with Germany, underscoring the significance of expanding collaboration in political, economic, and security sectors.

A significant part of the dialogue focused on the upcoming NATO leaders’ summit scheduled to take place in Ankara. Erdoğan expressed Türkiye’s expectation that the summit would enhance Europe’s defense capabilities within the NATO framework while ensuring robust transatlantic unity.

The leaders also exchanged perspectives on broader regional developments, placing particular emphasis on the war in Ukraine. Erdoğan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to supporting a lasting peace in the region and highlighted Ankara’s ongoing efforts to revive diplomatic negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

Throughout the conflict, Türkiye has maintained diplomatic relations with both Russia and Ukraine, positioning itself as a potential mediator in efforts to defuse tensions and facilitate dialogue. Erdoğan’s outreach reflects Türkiye’s strategic role in fostering peace and stability in the region.
