Google Triumphs in US Antitrust Case, Avoids Breakup

-

A U.S. judge has decided against the Department of Justice’s attempt to compel Google to divest its advertising exchange, known as AdX. This ruling permits Google to maintain control over a significant portion of its advertising technology enterprise, a decision that comes amidst ongoing debates about the company’s influence in digital advertising markets.

Judge Leonie Brinkema turned down the request to mandate the sale of AdX, although she approved most of the suggested limitations on Google’s operations. This decision follows a 2025 judicial finding that declared Google had unlawfully sustained monopolies in the realms of publisher ad servers and advertising exchanges.

The Justice Department, supported by several U.S. states, contended that due to Google’s previous actions, the company should no longer have authority over AdX. Google, however, resisted the proposed sale, arguing that severing the platform would pose technical challenges and potentially disrupt services for its customers.

This ruling marks another blow to U.S. antitrust efforts aimed at dismantling large technology companies. Previous attempts targeting other major tech firms have similarly struggled to achieve enforced asset divestitures.

While Google retains its advertising exchange, the court has imposed behavioral restrictions designed to mitigate concerns about competition and ensure fair treatment of publishers. This outcome reflects the complexities involved in regulating dominant players in the tech industry, balancing the need for competition with the operational realities of maintaining complex digital infrastructures.
