Greek PM Urges NATO Caution in Türkiye Jet Negotiations

-

As discussions emerge about the potential resumption of U.S. F-35 fighter jet sales to Türkiye, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has chosen to sidestep direct comments on the matter. Instead, he emphasized the importance of NATO allies being considerate of regional security issues. Mitsotakis’ remarks come as he prepares for the NATO summit in Ankara, where he reiterated Greece’s commitment to fostering better relations with Türkiye through dialogue and good-neighborly cooperation.

While expressing support for improved bilateral ties, Mitsotakis underscored that NATO must address the security concerns of all its member states. His comments reflect the ongoing regional disputes that have historically strained relations, particularly the territorial and maritime disagreements between Greece and Türkiye in the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean.

The backdrop to these remarks includes recent signals from U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting that Washington might reconsider its stance on defense cooperation with Türkiye. This could potentially involve lifting restrictions and resuming the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Türkiye, alongside a possible easing of CAATSA sanctions.

Despite diplomatic endeavors to enhance relations, the longstanding issues over maritime boundaries and territorial claims remain prominent sources of friction between the two NATO allies. Mitsotakis’ comments highlight the delicate balance NATO must maintain in addressing the complex security dynamics within the alliance.
