Hungary Airlines Expands Cargo Services, Reshapes Operational Strategy

-

Hungary Airlines is adapting its strategies amid shifting conditions in the European air cargo market, which have arisen following the implementation of a €3 customs duty on small shipments from July 1. This new regulation has impacted e-commerce cargo volumes across the continent, initially causing a spike in shipments in June as retailers raced to clear goods before the duty came into effect. However, July saw a decline in shipments and increased processing times, although the market is slowly finding stability. Adding to the complexity, the industry is bracing for an additional €2 processing fee slated for November.

In light of these changes, Hungary Airlines had to navigate challenges with the maintenance schedule of its primary freighter, an Airbus A330-243F registered as HA-LHU. Due to global supply-chain issues, the aircraft’s C-check was delayed until mid-September, with expectations to resume full operations by the end of the month. This situation has prompted the airline to rethink its approach by adjusting its route network, refining cargo-handling procedures, and temporarily reducing flight frequencies to optimize aircraft load factors as market dynamics evolve.

Furthermore, Hungary Airlines is facing a fleet adjustment as its second aircraft, an Airbus A330-243P2F with registration HA-ZTO, is set to depart the fleet following its owner’s decision to sell. Despite this, the airline remains committed to fleet expansion and is actively exploring leasing and other growth opportunities to maintain a robust operational capacity.

In a move to diversify its services, Hungary Airlines is venturing into specialized cargo markets starting from the third quarter. The airline plans to offer live-animal transportation and temperature-controlled cargo services, utilizing real-time monitoring systems. This strategic expansion is aimed at tapping into higher-margin opportunities and providing more specialized service offerings to meet evolving customer needs.
