In a significant escalation, Ukraine has launched a major drone offensive against Russia, marking one of the largest such attacks since the conflict began. Russian authorities report that the assault resulted in the deaths of at least six people and ignited a large fire at a distribution warehouse near Moscow. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed it intercepted an unprecedented 1,478 Ukrainian drones within a 24-hour period, a figure that remains unverified by independent sources.
Moscow’s Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, stated that approximately 600 drones targeted the Moscow area, with 201 reportedly neutralized. Tragically, one person lost their life in the region during these attacks. A significant blaze erupted at a Wildberries distribution center near Podolsk, located about 25 miles south of Moscow’s center. The warehouse, spanning around 250,000 square meters, was severely damaged, reportedly crippling its operations, as per Ukraine’s military accounts.
The attacks underscore Ukraine’s advancing long-range strike capabilities, as it increasingly deploys drones to hit Russian military and economic targets far from the frontline. Ukrainian officials allege that several facilities associated with Wildberries are targeted due to their use in military logistics. Conversely, Russia continues its strategy of using drones and missiles to strike Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, with recent Russian attacks killing at least seven people in Ukraine, including in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. A missile strike on Kyiv injured six individuals and sparked fires, notably at a major book market where multiple businesses reportedly lost their entire inventory.
Further escalating tensions, a Spanish fighter jet participating in a NATO patrol shot down a suspected Russian drone after it breached Romanian airspace, NATO officials reported. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure, claiming that Moscow launched more than 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine over the past week.
The intensification of hostilities, characterized by both sides expanding their use of long-range weaponry, raises the potential for increased casualties and destruction far from the immediate conflict zones, illustrating the growing stakes in the ongoing war.
