Demi Vollering Claims Second Tour de France Femmes Title Amid Tactics Dispute

-

Demi Vollering claimed her second Tour de France Femmes title with a commanding performance on the final climbs near Nice, finishing 1 minute and 18 seconds ahead of her closest rival, Kasia Niewiadoma. The pivotal moment came on the Col d’Èze when the Dutch cyclist launched a decisive attack, leaving Niewiadoma behind with just 600 meters to go on the ascent. Despite multiple attempts by Niewiadoma, the 2024 champion, to break away, she could not outpace Vollering.

The victory for Vollering was set against the backdrop of a dispute between the two riders concerning race tactics from the previous day. Niewiadoma had accused Célia Gery, a member of Vollering’s team, of impeding her progress during a critical section of Saturday’s stage. This incident became a point of contention and was a topic of discussion leading into the final leg of the race. However, Niewiadoma later acknowledged Vollering’s strength, expressing her desire to race fairly despite the controversy.

Vollering emphasized that her win was a testament to her team’s deserving performance in the race. Meanwhile, Niewiadoma secured second place overall, continuing her impressive streak of podium finishes in recent editions of the Tour. The rivalry and tension between the two riders added an extra layer of drama to the competition, but ultimately, Vollering’s tenacity and skill on the climbs ensured her victory.

The final stage proved challenging for Marlen Reusser, who experienced a setback after crashing during her descent of the Col d’Èze. The Swiss rider, who had started the day in third place overall, saw her position drop to 14th in the general classification due to the incident. Reusser’s misfortune highlighted the unpredictable nature of the race and the physical demands faced by the competitors.
