Spotify Labels AI Artists, Excludes Them From User Recommendations

-

In an effort to address the growing presence of AI-generated music, Spotify is implementing new strategies to make it easier for users to identify artificial artist profiles. Starting in September, the streaming giant will introduce an “AI persona” label on the profiles and track listings of artists created using artificial intelligence. This initiative is designed to help listeners differentiate between actual musicians and AI-generated identities, while also shielding genuine artists from being overshadowed by content generated through AI.

Spotify’s new measures will also see AI personas being excluded from personalized recommendations by default. This change aims to support real musicians by ensuring that AI-generated content does not take away from their visibility on the platform. The company plans to allow artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated. However, Spotify will also employ human reviewers alongside AI-driven tools to identify any undisclosed AI personas that might slip through the cracks.

This decision comes amidst a rapid increase in AI-generated music. Spotify has highlighted the magnitude of this issue by revealing that they removed 75 million spam tracks over a period of 12 months. This statistic underscores the challenge posed by the influx of artificial and low-quality content infiltrating music streaming platforms.

As generative AI continues to become more prevalent in the music industry, Spotify acknowledges the growing importance of transparency. The company notes that listeners are increasingly interested in knowing whether the artist behind a track is a real individual or an AI-created identity. By introducing these new measures, Spotify aims to maintain this transparency and ensure that its users have a clear understanding of the origins of the music they are enjoying.
