Android Backups Will Now Impact Google Account Storage Limits

-

Google is set to make a significant change in how Android device backups are stored by including them in the free cloud storage allocation that comes with every Google Account. Currently, data such as SMS messages, call history, device settings, and app data are backed up without affecting the 15GB of free storage shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. With the upcoming update, however, these backups will count against the overall storage limit, potentially impacting users who are close to reaching their storage capacity.

This policy shift is expected to roll out in the coming weeks. While Google estimates that the average Android backup will increase storage usage by approximately 40MB, users who find themselves nearing their storage limit may need to manage their storage more actively. This could involve freeing up space or opting for a Google One subscription to expand their storage capacity. If an account runs out of available storage, automatic device backups will be paused until additional space is made available.

In addition to these changes, Google is reportedly working on enhancing backup controls for Android users. These new controls will provide users with the ability to select which apps and types of data they want to back up. This added flexibility is anticipated to not only help users better manage their backup sizes but also give them greater control over how their cloud storage is utilized.

The inclusion of Android backups in the free storage limit is a notable shift in Google’s storage policy, reflecting a broader trend of tech companies monetizing cloud storage as data needs continue to grow. As the policy takes effect, users are advised to monitor their storage usage closely to avoid disruptions in their backup services.
