Söder and Magyar Strengthen Bavaria-Hungary Relations in Recent Meeting

-

In a move to revive high-level political relations, Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder held talks in Budapest with Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar. This visit marks the end of an eight-year pause in direct political engagement between Bavaria and Hungary, signaling a renewed commitment to collaboration on various fronts.

Central to their discussions was the agreement to form a joint intergovernmental commission aimed at enhancing cooperation in key sectors. The areas of focus include trade, artificial intelligence, innovation, pharmaceuticals, defense, and higher education. Both leaders expressed a shared interest in boosting Europe’s competitive edge and reassessing the timeline for phasing out internal combustion engines.

Söder commended Hungary’s efforts to align more closely with the European mainstream, reflecting a positive shift in bilateral relations. The economic ties between Bavaria and Hungary were underscored as a foundation for this partnership, with Bavarian companies being significant employers in Hungary, providing tens of thousands of jobs.

The meeting highlights the strategic importance both regions place on their economic and political partnership, with the leaders committing to further dialogue. Plans for the next bilateral meeting have been set for 2027, indicating a long-term vision for their cooperation.
