Hungary’s FIDESZ MEPs Slam EU Commission for Silence on Rule-of-Law Issue

-

Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP delegation in the European Parliament has raised concerns about the European Commission’s silence on recent changes in Hungary’s political and constitutional landscape, which they argue threaten democratic institutions. This issue was brought to light during a joint session involving the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control.

In the meeting, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László urged the Commission to take a stand on several matters, including constitutional amendments, limitations on political competition, alterations impacting parliamentary mandates, and the autonomy of state institutions. These lawmakers highlighted that the Commission had previously expressed rule-of-law concerns and suspended EU funding to Hungary, yet it has not addressed these latest developments.

The delegation questioned whether these constitutional changes align with European democratic standards and emphasized the need for consistent application of democratic principles across all EU member states. They argued that the Commission’s lack of response to these issues raises questions about its commitment to upholding such standards uniformly.

FIDESZ–KDNP members stressed that the European Union must ensure that democratic norms are maintained equally among its members, reflecting on the Commission’s past actions of withholding funds due to rule-of-law issues. Despite these pressing concerns, Commission representatives did not offer detailed answers during the parliamentary hearing.
