Germany Plans Ticket Barriers Installation at Key Train Stations

-

Germany is weighing the implementation of ticket barriers at key train stations due to escalating concerns over violent incidents targeting railway staff during ticket inspections. Transport Minister Steffen Bilger has suggested that enhancing controls at station entrances might help ensure passengers hold valid tickets before reaching platforms, especially for long-distance travel.

Currently, German train stations operate without such barriers, with ticket verification conducted by railway staff onboard trains. Bilger acknowledged the challenges of implementing ticket barriers across the nation, noting the varied development of German stations over time. However, he cited examples from the United Kingdom and France, where access to platforms is more regulated, as possible models to consider.

The proposal emerges against the backdrop of an uptick in violence against train staff. A particularly tragic incident occurred in February when a train conductor succumbed to injuries inflicted during an assault by a passenger traveling without a valid ticket.

As discussions around the potential introduction of ticket barriers continue, the aim is to enhance the safety and security of railway employees while ensuring compliance with ticketing requirements. The idea underscores a growing concern within Germany about maintaining order and safety in public transport systems.
