Greek expatriates in Saudi Arabia have expressed support for Greece’s military assistance to the Kingdom, highlighting the strengthening of bilateral relations and increased regional security. This backing comes in the wake of Greece deploying Patriot air defense systems to safeguard Saudi Arabia’s critical infrastructure, including energy facilities along the Red Sea coast, amidst rising regional tensions.
The deployment underscores the growing defense cooperation between Greece and Saudi Arabia, reflecting their shared commitment to regional security. Greek residents in Saudi Arabia, such as Ioannis Barmpounis and Dimitra Chasapi, noted the personal significance of Greece’s contribution to the Kingdom’s security, emphasizing the mutual trust and cultural affinities between the two nations.
During a visit to the Greek Patriot air defense contingent in Yanbu on October 15, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias reaffirmed Athens’ commitment to Saudi security. His visit also included discussions with Saudi leaders on furthering defense cooperation and addressing regional security concerns, particularly those related to missile and drone threats to strategic infrastructure.
For Greece, the deployment not only enhances its security relationship with Saudi Arabia but also provides valuable operational experience in modern air defense. Greek expatriates have expressed a sense of safety living in Saudi Arabia, despite regional tensions, and hope that the cooperation between the two countries will extend into economic, professional, and cultural domains.
Barmpounis and Chasapi expressed optimism that continued collaboration between Greece and Saudi Arabia would contribute to regional stability, bolster diplomatic relations, and promote lasting peace. They envision a partnership that transcends defense, fostering broader ties between the two nations.
