Heatwave in Europe Ruins €2 Billion Crops, Sparks Food Price Worries

-

A sweltering heatwave in June has led to significant agricultural losses in Europe, with crop damage estimated at €2 billion, according to recent industry assessments. The scorching temperatures have slashed grain production by approximately 9 million tonnes, sparking fears over rising food prices and potential threats to regional food security.

The heatwave has notably impacted crucial crops such as wheat, barley, maize, and oats, resulting in the smallest grain harvest seen in the European Union and the United Kingdom since 2018. Maize and wheat, in particular, suffered during critical growth phases—maize during pollination and wheat during grain development—leading to reduced yields in several primary agricultural zones.

France faces the brunt of the losses, with maize production anticipated to drop by about 3.4 million tonnes. Hungary and Spain are also experiencing notable declines. Farmers across the continent have reported significant crop damage, with some predicting yield reductions of up to 50% to 70% due to prolonged periods of high temperatures and drought conditions.

The United Kingdom has not been spared, with extended dry spells in spring and early summer affecting crop growth. In response, UK farmers have initiated earlier-than-usual harvests and ramped up irrigation efforts to safeguard production of fruits, vegetables, and livestock.

This diminished harvest is likely to increase Europe’s dependency on grain imports, potentially driving up global grain and food prices. Market analysts caution that additional weather-related disruptions in other major agricultural areas, including drought-stricken regions in the United States, may further constrain global food supplies.
