Greece has taken on the presidency of the United Nations Security Council as of October 1, marking the start of its second and final term during its 2025–26 tenure as an elected member. Ambassador Aglaia Balta, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, will lead the 15-member council throughout the month.
The Security Council is set to tackle several pressing international issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, the crisis in Gaza, tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, the conflict in Sudan, and the security situation in Haiti. The council’s agenda also involves discussions concerning Haiti, where an international security force is working to curb armed violence and stabilize the region ahead of upcoming elections.
Greece’s presidency coincides with critical discussions regarding the selection of the next UN secretary-general. The Security Council holds the responsibility of recommending a candidate to the General Assembly, with the new secretary-general expected to assume office on January 1, 2027.
