Orbán Advocates for EU Policy Changes, Justifies His Veto Approach

-

Viktor Orbán, a prominent Hungarian political figure, recently defended Hungary’s use of its veto power within the European Union, framing it as a counter to what he perceives as political pressure from Brussels. During an international press conference held in Belgium, Orbán emphasized his commitment to bolstering conservative and sovereigntist factions throughout Europe. He argued that despite facing electoral challenges, parties with patriotic and anti-immigration platforms are gaining traction, fueled by widespread dissatisfaction with the EU’s approach to security, migration, economic competitiveness, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Addressing ongoing disputes over EU funding, Orbán noted that his previous administration viewed the withholding of funds as a tactic for political leverage. In response, his government had threatened to obstruct crucial EU decisions, such as the approval of the bloc’s forthcoming seven-year budget. Orbán suggested that Hungary should persist in exercising its veto power when necessary to secure financial resources it deems rightfully owed.

Orbán also criticized the EU’s mechanisms that link funding to specific political and legal conditions, arguing that these measures pave the way for potential political pressure on member states in the future. He expressed concern that such conditions could be used as leverage against countries like Hungary, affecting their sovereignty in decision-making processes within the EU framework.

Looking to the future, Orbán predicted a rise in influence for conservative and patriotic parties across the European landscape. He suggested that as these parties gain momentum, center-right groups will eventually face a pivotal choice: to either form alliances with the political left or pursue greater unity among right-leaning forces. Orbán’s remarks highlight an ongoing debate within the EU about its political direction and the balance of power among its member states.
